Holy Tree 41- or 51-point talent idea

It’s no secret that most holy priests are less than enamored of the Holy tree’s 41-point talent, Circle of Healing. For that matter, CoH is a big reason a lot more people don’t go Holy spec at all. Blizzard has intimated they’re aware of the dissatisfaction with CoH (as well as with the 31-point talent, Lightwell, a.k.a. Lolwell).

If Blizzard is serious about “fixing” the Priest talent trees, how about an area-of-effect heal-over-time at the 41-point level? (Sorry, but I don’t buy the argument that LoL or CoH does that.) Let’s call it, oh…Prayer of Renewal?

This would be an instant-cast spell that heals all group or raid members within 30 yards for 15 seconds (I’ll leave it up to Blizz to figure out the amount healed per tick). I could even live with a 1.5-second cast (but I’d grumble). Move outside 30 yards, and you lose the benefit. It would scale in the same manner as our other Prayers, with one or two Codexes required for higher ranks of the spell. And of course, only the global cooldown applies.

At worst, consider something like this for the 51-point talent in the expansion. (I would really rather see a spell along the lines of Holy Nova that justifies being in the 51-point slot–but that’s another article for another day.)

I know Paladins and Druids might scream “Unbalancing!” (not to mention the uproar in PvP circles), but if that’s the case, then tweak those other healers so the priest is what a priest should be: The game’s best Healer, forever and ever, amen.

Healing: It’s what Priests do!

Amen! I’ve been yelping for an AOE HoT for so long that I sometimes have nightmares about it.

If anyone’s going to get it, it’ll probably be a druid though. *cry*

And I try not to harp on this too much, because I LIKE that other people are viable healers, but…c’mon. When priests are described as “the masters of healing and preservation” but are still laughed out of raids for being anything but shadow spec, there’s a problem.

tweak those other healers so the priest is what a priest should be: The game’s best Healer, forever and ever, amen.

I’m going to quibble (grin). I think Blizzard uses a different definition of “best”. Not “the one who can put out the most healz” (quantity), but “the one who can heal in all situations.” Your AoE HoT is a ‘best of all worlds’ heal. Oh, I like it and I want it, but it’s too many things. hmmm – on the other hand, I see a lot of potential overheal wastage. If it required a reagant like the other prayers… maybe. Just enough frustrating uselessness to prevent it being an all-heal all-the-time spell.

hmm, as long as we’re in whimsy mode, I’ll play here instead of writing today’s post (s?).

Fixing Lightwell. Put a user cooldown – say, 10 seconds. (It takes 8 to apply, so this would work well). Away goes the most common idiocy/abuse — multiclicking. The second most common – a melee player grabbing a tick – is just going to have to stay.

CoH is a surprisingly easy fix. About double the healing power, I think, and increase the radius to at least 20 yards. Or leave the healpower alone and boost radius to something that works — 25 to 30 yards. Oh, due to range and AoE I’d be willing to continue the nominal 1:1 hpm(1) (Heals per minute for one recipient) rate.

I want another level or two for the frisbee.

The real whimsy is going to be over in the discipline tree. The developers and a few “blues” have indicated there’ll be a Major reworking so that discipline tree is “better”. The dominant factors in that tree are: emphasis of spirit; ignore/mitigate damage; improve mana efficiency. Based on some teasers in various blue posts, I suspect (hope?) that my “real wish” is going to come true — spirit is going to become a “it matters” stat like all the rest. That is, one that applies during combat in some way, shape or form. If so, I expect to see a few more talents that leverage spirit in the discipline tree. Talents that improve the spirit:effect ratio of these spells, for example. I’d not be surprised to see some improved ‘armor’ in discipline, either. And maybe another mana-regen (or perhaps a modification of meditation). hmmm… and maybe, just maybe, a spell haste effect?

All that said, I’d have no objections to priests becoming more powerful healers — it annoys me that on an ungeared basis Druids have bigger heals (they pay for them in time and mana, but still…). And it annoys me that Paladins can steady-shot single heals forever. But… we’re the GPs, not the specialists. If your group’s large enough to have the slots, get specialists. If you’re having to double up or want flexibility, get the generalist. They (We) won’t do as well as the specialist in the specialist’s field, but we’ll knock their socks off in the other aspects.

Okay, let’s really play this out. *grin* Death Knight is coming…now to me, that just spells “SHADOW DAMAGE” all over the place. I worry for our shadow-specced cousins. But…and I know this is a huge “but” (well maybe not as big as a Feral Druid’s *wink*)…but if that means SPriests can be more effective healers by some combination of tweaking Disc & Shadow (and adding Prayer of Renewal!), then I think most of us would be okay with that. I have a friend who is Shadow, and she claims to top the damage meters in PUGs. I’m not sure that’s right…even in a PUG!

Kirk, by all means a reagent should be required for PoR. In fact, I have to admit to being a bit surprised the reagent costs don’t go up with the ranks of our Prayers (ACK! did I say that out loud?? I imagine you guys take full packs of candles into a raid. ;) )

I guess I don’t mind not having “bigger heals” but I want to be the most effective healer in a group. There should never be a question about who’s healing the MT (assuming a Holy Priest is in the group).

*laughs* I can’t believe some of the stuff I’m saying: Until I got Osprey to Outland, I wasn’t even sure I wanted to play a priest! And I still love dealing massive amounts of DPS with my rogues and hunters, but there’s a real sense of accomplishment in healing through an instance, and knowing that we didn’t have to redo any fights because I was on top of my healing.

Death Knight will be… probably, using what little the developers have said Warcraft III as guides… best described as an anti-paladin. A Plate-wearing necromancer/warlock. Spells of blood, spells of frost, and spells of darkness, all fueled by the power of runes engraved upon the death-knight’s weapons before battle begins.

    But it’s all guesses.
