“What’s a favicon?” I knew what they were, I just didn’t know what they were called till BRK talked about his. (If you don’t know, and don’t want to click a link, it’s the little icon that shows up next to the site URL or name in your bookmarks, or, if you use a tabbed browser, next to the site name on your tab.)
The WordPress theme I’m currently using had a favicon built in, which was nice…but has no relevance to me or this blog.
So I thought I’d see if I could figure out how to make my own. I had the right graphic–an icon I use on the VN Boards.
So it was simply a matter of downloading it, converting it to an .ico file with HyperSnap, and uploading to the theme directory. Riiiiiiight…
No matter what I did, the favicon area remained blank. (Yep, I did all the right things such as making sure name was “favicon.ico” and the size was right–I tried 16×16, 20×20, and 32×32. (The original is 20×20.) No go. *grumble*
The next thing I did was to Google “favicon” to see what I could find. The third link I found had just the answer: Browse to your picture, click a button, and voilá! Download to my desktop, and upload to my theme folder. Cool…umm…still no go.
Since the area for the favicon was showing up in the tab, I knew I was close. So I changed the background from gray to white and tried “Favicon From Pics” again. Uploaded…and there it was!
So, I tried again to create my own 16, 20, and 32-px square icons. None of them worked. (Favicon from Pics saves both a 16×16 and 32×32 icon in the .ico file.) I suspect the .ico format HyperSnap saves, and the format I downloaded, are just enough different that one doesn’t register properly.
At any rate…a little blue bird now graces the site. Too bad so much detail is missing, but beggars can’t be choosers, right?
Edit: To see the new icon, you’ll have to clear your browser cache and refresh the page. That might also help you see the slightly brighter and more readable link text.

Want the bad news? I’m still seeing the default favicon – the fancy F.
Easy fix: Clear your browser cache.
(You have NO idea how many times I had to do that this morning!)
How do you convert the .jpg or .gif into a .ico file?
The program I use is HyperSnap (linked above). And the resulting file certainly looks like is SHOULD work. But almost any graphics program that saves in multiple formats should work.
However, the only thing that gave me a visible favicon was the site I linked in the article: http://www.chami.com/html-kit/services/favicon/
I decided I owed it to you to at least check out your blog since mine has only been up for about 6 hours and you already found it AND gave me positive feedback =D…Then I got lucky and found this article on the very subject I was struggling with all morning after starting my blog…however I’m having trouble figuring out how to get the file onto my blog since the physical html file isn’t stored on my computer…
Aerislan, in your Dashboard on Blogger, click Template > Edit HTML. This will bring up your .css file. Somewhere after the
tag, insert your code from the favicon site. Save, clear your cache, and reload. You should now have your favicon showing for your blog.If this doesn’t work, you might want to email BRK and ask how he did it–should be the same for you.
