For the Geeks: My Hardware Setup

Last week, I mentioned the computer hardware upgrades I did as a birthday present to myself. In a couple comments, I’ve mentioned my dual-monitor setup, and Matticus asked for a picture. So, here it is:

Monitors

On the left is the Dell 24″ and to the right is the 20″ Gateway. (Sorry about the flash effect on the screens; the pictures w/o flash weren’t as clear.

On the keyboard tray is an Ideazon Fang gamepad (makers of the ZBoard), just to the left of my Logitech G15 keyboard. My mouse is a Logitech MX Revolution.

I have to confess, the Fang doesn’t get as much use as it should–it’s really quite a nifty gadget. My problem is, I can’t break myself of the habit of using my numeric keypad for movement. Yes, I could move it to the right of the keyboard…but that rather defeats the purpose of two-handed control. One of the main reasons I got the Fang is the first joint of my right middle finger is arthritic, so mashing the Num-8 (Run) and Num-5 (Autorun) keys for hours at a time starts to get painful. But I do make an effort to use it; my bigger problem is remembering how I’ve programmed it! (Fortunately, I can pull up a graphical representation on the right-hand screen to cheat with.)

That’s a harsh sweet setup you got going there. Once I get some money without having to worry about tuition, I may very well go the same route.

You stole my idea for a post this week! Brain-thief!

    *winks*

I’m still going to do mine, but sounds like you’ve got a really nice setup here!

“Brain-thief” — I like that! But blame Matt–he’s the one who wanted the pic!
