Odds’n'Ends

It’s the end of the week, and I’m odd. ‘Nuff said on that topic. ;)

A couple blogs I want to highlight for you, in case you haven’t seen ‘em yet:

  • Ladies first. Lienna’s Log is the blog of a Blood Elf hunter on Sporeggar (Eu). Good, entertaining read; take a look at her take on Pet Genders.
  • Next up is a real doofus. No, really! Doofy the Paladin is a healadin, with an interesting slant on things. (He’s also a frequent commenter on lots of WoW blogs; I always enjoy reading his comments here and elsewhere.) If you want a good chuckle, The Great Shattered Halls Sit-In of ’07 is a hoot!

Welcome to the Aerie Blogroll, both of you!

In other news, I came to the realization this morning as I was (rather fruitlessly) mining in Nagrand, that an epic flying mount should pay for itself in very short order. So the probability is 90 percent or more that when I get another 1700g (before the end of the month, for sure), Falken, my roguish miner/jewelcrafter, will be the beneficiary.

Originally, I’d planned that Talonis, my hunter, would be next–but I figure with Falken, I can make another 5K a lot faster than I can with Talonis. Not only can I mine a LOT faster (which means, of course, more ore and more gems to cut & sell), the rogue will be at least as effective, if not moreso, soloing the Netherwing quests.

Now the big question is, once he has 300 riding skill, has he completed the Netherwing quests through what’s-her-name…and I’m not positive that he has. However, it should be easy to get a group to do the single group quest, then it’ll be on to Netherwing Ledge. W00t! <–Shameless use of 2007′s Word of the Year.

Since getting back from Christmas vacation, I’ve spent almost all my time in game either grinding Netherwing faction or helping a couple friends level up their priests. But not a single instance. I hope that changes this weekend. I want to bring some of our 60-somethings through Ramparts, Blood Furnace, and Coilfang, and I’d like to start this weekend—maybe even tonight.

One of them is 64 (or possibly 65 already) and hasn’t done Ramps yet (he spent a LOT of time in AV at 60 and 61, and is just now doing the Outland quests), and those easier instances will give others a chance to hone their grouping skills before we resume the Kara attunement sequence.

I’d also like to try to get Osprey through SV for his last key fragment, and either he or Talonis (or both!) through BM. Errr…which means Osp needs to do Old Hillsbrad yet. Bleh–too many bad memories there of trying it too early with both Talonis and Kestrel. Of course, this probably means a pug, or at least a partial pug. /grits teeth

Finally, an update on my UI: I spent much of New Year’s Eve and a good portion of New Year’s Day rebuilding the UI. I was inspired by "Seerah’s Suitcase" (search for it at WoWInterface). I installed Seerah’s UI to my laptop while on vacation, but there were too many differences between it and mods I depend on, for me to stick with it. However, one thing I really liked was eePanels (available from WoWAce).

What eePanels does, is allow you to create a background (I chose black, but it can be any color, or textured) to place behind UI elements. I’m not posting a screenie at this time because there is still a lot of work to do: My UI takes up a LOT of screen real estate (thank Elune for a 24" monitor!). However, the effect is very cool (IMO); I also created a similar texture to place behind my double FuBar bars.

Obviously, a comprehensive article on my UI is long overdue. But, I still have some bugs to work out. For example, the timer you get when doing the quest to take over the four towers in Eastern Plaguelands doesn’t show, so I need to track down THAT conflict–not exactly easy since I have to (a) be in EP and (b) be flagged for PvP and (c) Alliance can’t have control of all the towers. Just a PITA.

OH…but, I did install GnoMoreSpam (another WoWAce file). Haven’t played with it at all, but the /say channel GoldSpam is gone (of course, now the jerkfaces are using /emote spam in IF (and, I presume, in SW, Orgrimmar, etc.). Do those asshats get KOS’d on PvP Realms?

/sigh  The best-laid plans… I just got a call from Mrs. Kestrel; seems I’ll be stopping by Lowe’s on the way home to pick up a new garage door opener, with installation by yours truly scheduled for tomorrow. Don’t the gods know there are NFL playoff games (AND WoW) to be played tomorrow??

Have a great weekend, everyone!

Hi Sean! Thanks for stopping by.

This is the…3rd? 4th? opener I’ve installed. The equipment is better, but the process isn’t. It took us 8 hours, partly because I had to do some hacksawing I wasn’t expecting to do (on some weird-shaped pieces), and by then it was 6:30pm, we were cold, and getting hungry. I also had to really fight to remove an old bracket–a half-hour or more I do NOT want to relive.

But…the unit’s installed, everything’s connected, and it works like a champ.
