Edit: Apparently I’m the only one who is seeing this, and as it turns out, I see it only on my work computer. I’d still like to know if anyone else is seeing what I’m seeing; in the meantime, I’ll retract the ranting against Google. See? I’m not totally unreasonable! Thanks to those of you who’ve taken the time to provide feedback.
I do not like it, Sam I Am.
Err…Kes? WTH are you talking about?
THIS is what I’m talking about:
See what they did there?
When you click on the title of an article in Google Reader now, instead of being taken to that page, the page is loaded into the Reader. You can even comment within the Reader. How convenient!
How utterly dumb! One of the reasons I use a feed reader is to make the maximum use of my reading time: I can skim articles that don’t interest me, and pore over those that have a lot of meat (for me). But if I want to visit the blog itself, I can no longer do so by clicking the article link (unless there’s something I’m missing!). Instead, I have to click the link to the site’s main page, and from there, I can select the article I want to read. Unless of course, it’s a few days old and archived already. That means more searching.
(Caveat: If you’re still using a single-page, non-tabbed browser such as vanilla IE 6, this is a Good Thing. Umm…raise your hand if you’re a Luddite! (And I’m sorry if you’re stuck with it at work and can’t install Firefox.))
You know, Google, sometimes, I really DO want to visit a particular blog! Now, I suspect if I click through and import the page to the reader, it’s counting as a page and site visit by StatCounter, SiteMeter, FeedBurner Stats, etc. If not…umm…let’s just say, it damn well better! I don’t know the stats, but I’m going to go out on what I think is a pretty sturdy limb here and say Google Reader is probably the most widely used feed reader. If using it means we bloggers aren’t getting credited for site visits and page views, there’s gonna be Trouble. And yes, that’s a capital "T."
Sure, I understand this new functionality is a "convenience." But as with any so-called convenience, give me a choice, dammit! Now, if I’ve overlooked some way to alter this function, someone please enlighten me. But in that case, Google has definitely obscured how and where to change that particular setting.
Nice technology and all that, but I don’t like it. So, am I the stick-in-the-mud? I’d like your feedback.

Well, I’m getting something different. See, I just came here by the mechanism you just described as “google reader no longer does”. Your message came in feed, I opened it (and didn’t get the pretty graphics), I clicked on the title so I could drop to comments and post this.
Settings, maybe?
I can’t find any setting for this–so it’s definitely not something I changed.
So you’re saying you clicked the link in the reader, and it opened up the Aerie page in a new tab?
This is weird.
Interesting. I clicked the link in my google reader, using firefox AND IE7, and was sent directly to your site here. Wonder why you are experiencing this particular activity?! good luck though!
right click the title, choose “Open Link in New Tab”. Voila, actual blog in its own tab for full viewing and tracking pleasure.
@Maebius:
I’m wondering too. Now I need to see if it’s happening on my home computer too: I thought it was, but maybe not…
@Bryan:
Yep, I know I can do that…but…I liked it the OLD way! So, are you seeing the same thing I’m seeing when you (left-) click the title in the reader?
@anyone/everyone:
So…am I losing my mind? (Or, have I already lost it…)
I doubt that the clickthroughs don’t count for stats. If they changed that, they would be sabotaging FeedBurner’s “Reach” stat. Google owns FeedBurner now, so I doubt they’d do that.
You can also just type v, it opens the post in a new window/tab. j scrolls down an article, k scrolls up.
/waves I found your blog not too long ago, I’m really enjoying it.
@ Phaelia:
Good point, Phae. Added an edit at the top of the post as well, before I read your comment.
I’m still puzzled.
@ Becca:
…but thanks for that reminder–I really do need to get away from my mousing addiction and be more productive!
i r teh suk @ keyboard shortcuts
Thanks for visiting and thanks for the kind words!
I just realized that I have a Firefox addon from Lifehacker.com http://lifehacker.com/262020/trick-out-google-reader-with-better-greader/ that provides the option to “Preview Item”. Having this enabled a left click causes Google Reader to show the preview of the posting within Reader. Having that option disabled, a left click will automatically launch the post in a new tab. Check out your firefox addons or greasemonkey user scripts to disable that piece.
@Bryan:
BINGO!
Mystery solved, and resolved. Thanks! You have just earned a lifetime subscription to Kestrel’s Aerie!
I’m too worn out to rant about updates that don’t tell you about major functional changes. I’ll have to reconsider whether I want to continue using rude plugins such as Better GReader.
