Ut Oh–I Think I Caught a Bug

Okay, welcome back. Yeah, that wall of pink, I know…the things I do for friends.

For one thing, it seems I catch their bugs. Or is it BGs? Last night shortly after 9, my good friend and guildie Swissy, laser chicken of doom and balanced druid whose crits are anything but, logged on and expressed an interest in doing some battlegrounds. I suggested Netherwing faction quests. "Meh." How about Ogri’La? "Ehhh." Hmm…wasn’t really in the mood to play a lowbie alt.

Oh what the hell. I’ll humor her, go once, hate it, and at least get my PvP ticket punched.

So I log in Talonis, my undergeared 70 BM who can still deal decent MQoSRDPS. (Why isn’t that abbreviation in WoW Wiki yet??) We group, so I can sorta keep track of her, and get in the queue for Arathi Basin. We end up at the mines, and I’m trying desperately to learn BG-speak on the run (or is it just AB-speak? whatevah…).

WHOA! Red dots inc! (once I decided tracking elementals wasn’t going to be real helpful). Rogue…warrior…pally…damnshaman (yes, that is one word, and forever will be, till I get one on MY side!). Dead. Bah. Res, run back, we have some help…there’s that rogue, F12 (Bestial Wrath), send Talon, Concussive, Arcane, Steady, Kill Command, DEAD ROGUE! (Credit to Swissy as well: she was critting like madwoman, judging from the way health bars were dropping.)

We were well ahead, then suddenly the Horde started capping like mad. Well, they weren’t gonna get the mines without a … what’s this? Where am I rezzing now?? Crap. Head back to the mines…great battle raging…BATTLE OVER! Horde wins. I think I got about 10 HKs, since we were mostly on defense, but I only died five times. Heck, I’ll take a 2:1 ratio any day!

(BTW, if this seems rather confusing and disjointed, it’s nothing like I was really feeling.) Okay, so…let’s do it again! AB again, and within seconds we have 4 caps; this is gonna be a piece of cake. And it was. Died two or three times, maybe five HKs–we were still mostly defending. Okay, one more time…it’s getting kinda late…*sigh* This time we got a taste of our own medicine.

So we logged a couple alts into Stormwind, where Swissy showed me the staff she wanted to get, and I drooled a bit over some of the gear. Then I noticed the staff she wanted required AV marks, not AB. "Crap!" (Actually, she’s too ladylike, but I think she was thinking that.)

She’d never been to AV. I’d forgotten anything I knew or read about it (such as Nyssa’s hate for the place). What time is it? Oh, sure, we can do one AV battle. (We both live in the same time zone, and both have to be at work at 8am; it was currently between 10:15 – 10:30.)

So she logs Swissy back in while I forego the Hunter for a Rogue (I decided I wanted to dish out a little of what I’d been taking up to that point!). We were on Skype, and we were both amazed at the numbers of players when we got into the BG.  Ohhh…40-man! "So where do we go?" "I dunno; I’ve never been here before." "Well, we better figure it out…" …cuz we were underway… "I’m going to follow the big group!" "Sounds like a plan."

And we’re off–to where, exactly, neither of us had a clue. But we tried to stick with the main body, killing things with red names. A few deaths, but caused even more. We still had no freaking idea of what we were doing, but we DID know that the big number by Reinforcements for Alliance was a Good Thing. (At one point it was like 700-200 in our favor.)

But then the tide turned: I think now we were assaulting Drek’s fortress, and the Horde were massed there pretty well. I have never. Ever. EVER. seen so damned many shammy totems. Every time I targeted something, it was a totem! Have I mentioned my utter distaste for damnshammies? Maybe you can get a better appreciation of my hate by reading BRK:

Target the slimmy shammy, send Hobbes with a vengeance! Kill it!Kill the shammy! And with 172 of our own health left, that Shammy gotwhat was coming to him. Justice! Sweet, merciful Justice.

Shammy-Self Rez and dead BRK…

HEY! Where’s our Justice!?! AAAUUUGGGHHH!!!! /throw box of Ritz crackers in the bathroom

Yeah, that’s what I’m talkin’ about. And then our reinforcement number was dropping by 5′s…10′s…by the score…and 0.

So how’d we do? I didn’t screen shot the results, but I did get a bruise on my chin when my jaw dropped: Of all 40 Allies, Falken…Falken, my gimpy undergeared, poorly played Combat Dagger spec rogue was #10 for HKs with 55!! Oh. My. Goodness. Now, I know those aren’t solo kills, and for all I know, I didn’t even touch half of those. But then, everyone else got credit the same way I did (and I think the #1 score was in the 70s).

To put things in perspective: Falken was a level 60 rogue when I transferred him from Icecrown two years ago. He wasn’t created on day one (I think he was my third attempt at a rogue), but definitely in the first 6 months of retail. Before that AV battle, he had a total of 45 HKs in 3 years.

So…yeah…I have this bug…I think. The BG bug (no way am I skilled enough to even think about arenas; besides, those are too personal) has bit, and I think I’ve been bit hard. Who’dathunkit?? Soooo…Either Falken or Kestrel is gonna get a respec, and probably Sparverius, my 69-halfway-to-70 BM. Might have to fashion a DPS/healing set for Osprey for the odd WSG foray…

What the HELL am I saying??

*sigh* So what’s a good dagger rogue spec for BGs? Anyone?

I couldn’t tell you about a Combat Dagger spec for rogues as my rogue just hit Outlands for the first time last night (w00t!). But I can tell you that, while it doesn’t provide the DPS that Combat Swords does, Subtlety is a tasty treat for rogues when doing PvP. I strongly recommend giving it a shot if you’re going to be doing more BGs than raiding with him. It’ll take some getting used to. But once you do, you may not go back ;)

Yep; I used to be Subtlety (LOVE Shadowstep!), so I’m 99.999% sure that Falken, at least, will go back to that. I figure Kestrel may still do instances, so I think I’ll keep the Combat Daggers with him.

Heh. They’s fun, ain’t they. (somedays is more funs than others, but still.)

Yeah…too fun, I think. ;) Did an AB while I was home at lunch. Allies kept doing well, right up to the very end when suddenly we went from 2-2 to 3-1, and I think 4-1 at the end. I really need to respec to Sub though. Couldn’t cover enough ground fast enough while stealthed to be very effective.

If it was 10:15 on my battlegroup (Horde-side), I wouldn’t be able to start AV, because I’d be in the queue for an hour. Bah.

If you want to pwn in BG’s I can really recommend an 11/0/50 build with imp. ambush/backstab etc. (not recommended for arenas though due to resilience—for the exact build, look in armory for Shylock—orc rogue in guild “pity da foo”) Sorry I can’t access the armory at work or I would post it meself. I had that build on my 70 S1 geared rogue for a week of grinding and he was hitting clothies for 5100 ambush crits and 3k backstabs. Shadowstep gives you the mobility and daggers the fun crits…Really hoping for a dagger buff in 2.4 though…BTW great blog, I have been reading it for a while but just got around to posting.

Hey Tom! Thanks for posting. :) I did respec on Wednesday to a 17/0/44 Shadowstep build, so I’m stuck with that for a little while, but I’ll take a look at yours.

I was too busy to put an article up yesterday (besides work, my daughter-in-law and 3-yr-old granddaughter are here) but I plan to talk about my initial results with the respec, hopefully today.

    Thanks again for writing!
