My son just e-mailed me with the sad news that E. Gary Gygax, commonly recognized as one of the creators of Dungeons & Dragons and a founder of TSR Games, failed his saving roll and has died today at age 69.
I think it’s pretty safe to say World of Warcraft owes its existence and popularity in no small part to the contributions Gary made to "pen & paper" or "tabletop" role-playing games. It will be interesting to see how he is viewed historically. While I didn’t always agree with the directions he took with D&D, he was unquestionably the driving force behind its growth in popularity in the early 1970s.
He leaves behind quite a legacy, and while I never had the opportunity to meet him, I have tremendous respect for what he has given us.

While I might not have even been alive for the early days of DnD, I and anyone who enjoys it now owe a lot to him. He brought a lot of joy to a lot of people.
Gary Gygax and the products of his imagination had a huge influence on my life in my high school and college years. Even though I have not played any D&D products in quite a while, I connect my history with tabletop RPGs to my love of WoW today. Its a sad day.
