I was running SSO dailies when I got a /tell from a friend and former guildmate, "Would you like to heal the last boss in Kara? Please say yes! *begs*." How could I refuse?
In very short order, I was invited, summoned, given Vent info, and in we went. I found out later the raid had had a major mishap on Chess, so had done a soft reset. During the hour-long delay, their second healer had to log (it was around 11pm Server time).
The Raid Leader was very good at explaining the Prince fight, especially once she learned (I thought she already knew) this was my first look at Karazhan from the inside. The group, as I had been told, was pretty loose, but they were also very focused.
My job was, very simply, to spam heal the Pally tank. The RL was a Resto Shammy, and she had the rest of the raid. Sounded pretty simple to me!
Once the pull began, everyone buckled down to business; the chit chat disappeared off Vent, and we progressed very nicely into phase 3. At around 7 percent (maybe less) I noticed I’d suddenly taken a pretty big hit. I was almost exactly halfway through a Greater Heal, and made a bad decision to continue it rather than drink a heal pot (not sure I could have–had taken a mana pot at the start of the phase, and I’m not sure if my time was up) or cast Binding Heal.
Of course, you Kara vets know what happened next: Dead priest, and just could not get the one.last.heal on the tank to enable him to get Prince down. One percent never lasted so long, I’m almost positive.
Our second shot was a cluster almost from the get-go. The DPS group didn’t allow the tank to establish sufficient aggro before they started in, and Prince nailed all of them very quickly. I don’t think the fight went 3 minutes.
The third attempt, though, went off like clockwork. I was overhealing like hell, but there was no way I wasn’t keeping the tank well healed. I was proud of myself though: In all 3 attempts, I remembered to drink before mana was critical, I launched my shadow fiend early on (well, not so early in the first try), so it was available in phase 3 (but wasn’t needed). When Prince dropped, the tank was 100% and my mana was around 80%.
All in all, I was comfortable with how I did, but not completely satisfied. What if I’d been responsible for healing someone in addition to the tank? I was casting a lot more Rank 7 Greater Heals than necessary; on the other hand, I was around 63% on the FSR.
And as luck would have, the T4 Priest headgear token dropped! I was allowed to roll, and won, but the RL said she’d have given me the token anyway, since the other person who rolled was doing so for an off-spec (and rolled to keep it from being sharded). So I now have Light Collar of the Incarnate, complete with meta gem. Needed a red gem to enable the meta, but the sacrifice of the gem bonus was worth it. My +heal is now at 1660, buffed with Spirit and Elixir of Healing Power.
Now I just want to go back to Kara!
