The Essential WoW Blogroll and Feed Reader List

The other day, I was looking at my Google Reader reading list, and I was also making a couple additions and fixes to my blogroll. Both are fairly sizable; the former is almost unmanageable. So I got to thinking, if someone asked me to cite a single blog as a reference for a specific class or spec, could I do it? The answer I came up with is, "Probably, but it might take more than a little time to find the best one."

So that triggered a thought, and copying the example by Matticus, I asked my fellow bloggers on Twitter, "If I want to learn X class or Y spec, what’s the 1st blog you’d suggest? Why?" Essentially, I was looking for a starting point; unfortunately, no single blog really works as a starting point

My prejudices in compiling this digest leaned towards more recent material: Of late, many bloggers who rose to prominence in their class or spec have either changed focus (e.g.,Egotistical Priest, who is writing more about the Hunter class recently) or have stopped blogging entirely about their original spec (Priestly Endeavors; Kirk has recently returned from a hiatus and is leveling up a Druid these days). (Both sites still have a huge amount of extremely valuable and important information: Ignoring either would be a mistake!)

Here, then, are their responses, as well as some suggestions of my own. (I got a lot of suggestions, but not a lot of "whys"; I’ve included that information, and where my own opinions are expressed, I’ve attempted to be sure the distinctions are clear.)

And yes, there are some blanks. Help me fill them in! Have a better suggestion? By all means, put it in the comments!

Druid

    Balanced

Feral: BigBearButt, a recommendation from Softthistle and Rhoelyn. I would recommend, for technique, tutorials, and theorycrafting, Karthis’ Of Teeth and Claws. It should be noted BBB recently has scaled back his raiding considerably.

Restoration: Phaelia, at Resto4Life, hands down. Recommended by Softthistle, Matticus, Rhoelyn and myself.

Hunter

Beast Master: BigRedKitty. Recommended by Gun Lovin’ Dwarf Chick, Not too many people will argue this choice. Lately, Daniel’s started doing a lot more than just Beast Master tutorials, but his earlier stuff, especially what he did in his first stint with WoW Insider, are the Beast Master’s Bible. For someone just starting out as a hunter, Pike’s recent efforts at Aspect of the Hare are every bit as good, and not as heavy on the theorycrafting.

Survival: Lienna’s Log, recommended by me.

MarksmanThe Hunter’s Mark; again, my recommendation. Lassirra is actually an outstanding overall hunter reference, with considerable experience in all three specs. (Her current build is actually a MM/SV combo.)

Mage

    Arcane:

    Fire

Frost: Euripedes at Critical QQ, suggested by Gun Lovin’ Dwarf Chick.

Paladin

Holy: Banana Shoulders, by me. Bonus content: Siha is also a Guild Leader, so you get that perspective, too.

Protection: Ardent Defender, by me. Bibble suggested Maintankadin, which link I’m including, but I was really looking for blogs, rather than forums or other kinds of websites. (That’s why Elitist Jerks, for example, doesn’t make my list, the excellence of their information notwithstanding.) Instead, I would recommend Ardent Defender.

    Retribution:

Priest

    Discipline:

Holy: A Dwarf Priest, recommended by Rhoelyn, and I concur, although the theorycrafting can get a little deep. Close behind are World of Matticus, Egotistical Priest, and Priestly Endeavors, in increasing depth of theorycrafting. In fact, it’s practically a four-way tie.

    Shadow:

Rogue

    Assassination

Combat: Parry, Dodge, Spin!, recommended by Phaelia. I agree; I just wish Valenna were more prolific!

    Subtlety:

Shaman

    Enhancement:

    Elemental:

    Restoration: TooManyAnnas, suggested by Matticus.

Warlock

PvP: Out of Mana, suggested by TeePee at TapTapPewPew

Everything Else: Recommended by Rhoelyn, the aforementioned TapTapPewPew  (whose spec I couldn’t determine, but what does it matter? All ‘locks are OP anyway. )

Special Mention

World of Matticus:  Matt is one of the most prolific WoW bloggers, and provides considerable insight into raiding in general, managing a guild (he’s an officer, but not a guild leader), and includes a lot of resources on blogs and blogging.

Again, if you have suggestions to fill in the blanks, or want to alert the world to an alternative to any of those I’ve listed, please comment!

TeePee, I believe, is Destro spec for ‘locks. Good info there. Shastarian over at http://www.lgcoding.com/au is (was?) Demonology spec, so another great ‘lock reference.

    Nice list there, bud.

Great post. I never really thought about how hard it would be to fill in a blog for each specific tree of every class.

Another great list I’d like to see would be to find blogs specifically on PvP/Arena for each class’ point of view.

    You forgot warriors! =(

I recommend http://www.tankingtips.com/ as a great blog with a ton of info.

    http://dwarfpriest.com for shadow.

Also, http://www.maniasarcania.com for hunters’ pets – small niche but he fills it magnificently :)

@ isheepthings: I’ll leave that for someone more into PvP than I. :) However, Megan’s blog at Out of Mana is a pretty good PvP/Arena reference, regardless of class.

@ Dezdemone: It’s not that I forgot them: I’m just not aware of any “how-to” warrior blogs. Thanks for the recommendation though! I’ll edit and include it.

@ Merlot: Excellent, excellent point. Mania’s site is one of my favorites.

@ Nathan: Heh…I think I’m a member of Warcraft Bloggers. However, an aggregator is pretty much what a feed reader is. I know there are differences, but I was trying to narrow the focus a bit–drinking from a firehose will quench your thirst, but you may drown, too! :)

I’m pretty sure I tweeted this one already, maybe I imagined it though!

For Balance Druid Gray Matter should be your first stop – http://graymatterwow.blogspot.com/

The guy (I think it’s a guy?) rocks!

Hearing myself mentioned in the same paragraph as BRK is too much /blush

I know a lot of really great Survival hunter blogs. Mirshalak’s Lair comes to mind, as does Less QQ More PewPew (although it’s overall more of a “general fantastic theorycrafting site” and Survival Hunters Anonymous (less active as of late, but a great resource.) It really is sort of hard to pick just one though… but the amount of Survival Hunter blogs out there really astonishes me sometimes!

Oh, and Moonkin Druid: Laser Chicken, all the way! :P

Moonkin druid – Gray Matter ftw!! The guy’s gear guides and general theorycraftyness is beyond me, and makes my life MUCH easier :)

I thought I’d twittered him but obviously not :(

    I’d recommend myself : http://rrvs.blogspot.com/ But not sure if that’s allowed :P
Gold obtaining methods, rogue and hunter info, random bits, news on upcoming patches etc.

http://chaintrap.net/ is also a very good hunter blog.
http://www.maniasarcania.com/ also very good for hunters.

For rogues i’d also say :
http://roguecrap.blogspot.com/ But she has since stopped updating over a year ago.
    And there’s always http://www.roguespot.com/

I’d recommend http://www.roguespot.com/ for rogues and http://www.chaintrap.net/ for hunters.

And you can’t miss out on http://petopia.brashendeavors.net/ or http://www.maniasarcania.com/ and http://roguecrap.blogspot.com/ obviously.

WP seems to dislike a large number of links in comments.. so i’ll limit it to 2 for now.

These 3 are very good for their purpose, only rogue theorycrap is not updating anymore so roguespot is a good seconds, but http://www.chaintrap.net/ and http://www.roguespot.com/ and http://petopia.brashendeavors.net/ are 3 links that should definitely be on the list.

I’m amazed to see myself mentioned on this after almost a month with no updates, Pike has already listed the survival hunter blogs that I know of and would recommend.

As for myself I *may* be making a gradual return soon, so be warned, a bright green scorpid is once again on the loose!

great post. I rely heavily on my fellow bloggers to point me in the right direction. So class specific blogs are a godsend. And your list also perhaps shows room where new bloggers could find an audience.

http://spicytunas.com/ — A frost mage that highlights much about the frost tree, also covering spell haste and add-ons (such as decursive) when she’s not mentioning the happenings of in-game and other games/animes as well.

http://e4ae.blogspot.com/ — Josh, our new ret-pally addition to our circles. I’ve only glanced at his posts, but they seem quite solid!

http://ramblingbear.blogspot.com/ — Feral tank and guild officer. Covers bear-ness, along with having insightful articles about tanks (and an occasional note about warlocks too).

http://frostmage.net/ — Despite what he writes to the side, he’s been messing around with the idea of a panzerkin for quite a while. Though the posts are scarce, I do like to listen to his thoughts about tanking as a boomkin (and his hit table post was helpful too).

Those are the top few that I thought of off the top of my head — Oop. Forgot. Shamans!

http://enhancementshaman.wordpress.com/ and http://enhancement-shaman.blogspot.com/ Oh, and http://lightsgrace.wordpress.com/ — They’re enhancement shamans (really? As if you couldn’t tell). I’m sure Anna could tell you more about them. I just pulled them up and they look decent by ways of information. ^^

Of course, I write about Ret Paladins but I’m not about to claim myself as a go-to site.

Thanks to Softi and Delo’s for recommending my blog. It’s not 100% moonkin related but I think it has a lot of good information.
