Add-On Review: Possessions

Possessions: We all have them. We fill our inventory with them, we fill our bank slots with them. We buy bigger bags, or even create alts who form a bank guild, just to hold all our stuff.

And therein lies a problem: Where IS all that stuff?? Some people are very organized, and know all their herbs are on Alt #1; Ore and gems on #2; leather and cloth on #3. I’m not one of those people. At one time, I had Arakkoa Feathers spread among four characters. Makes it a little difficult to assemble 30 for a quest turn-in if I can’t remember where I have them all stashed.

There are several "bag, bank and inventory" mods available. Most of these have the same idea: Open a character’s inventory and visit the character’s bank account. Do this with each character, then you can open any of those characters’ inventories from any other character.

However, most of those mods don’t have a text-based search function. My inventory add-on of choice, Possessions, is all about the ability to search. It keeps track of all items and money on all of your characters, per server, including worn, banked, bags, and mailbox (if you’ve seen them there).

Once installed, the syntax is fairly easy to use:

/poss           Opens the main Possessions window

/poss -help     Displays help

/poss -sct        Enable/Disable StackCountToggle

/poss "text"    (Without the quote marks) Opens up the window listing all items matching the text, e.g. /poss silk will show all Silk Cloth, Bolts of Silk, and Silken Turbans, if I had any.

So typing /poss gives us the following window:

Later on, I might want to know how all those Alterac Valley Marks are distributed. So, I type   /poss Mark of Honor   and get a new listing. This one only has 5 lines on it, so I hover my cursor above "Alterac Valley Mark of Honor" to get the following pop-up:

(Maybe it’s time for Falken to get a few Combat Heal Pots, hmm?)

I mentioned Possessions can track your characters’ money. While there are other add-ons I prefer for this function, you can see at the bottom of the following shot how Possessions does it (note this can be done from any Possessions window):

poss2

Here’s another example of  the functionality of Possessions. Let’s say I’m in the Auction Hall on my bank character. I know one of my alts needs a headgear upgrade but I can’t remember which one. I bring up Possessions using the default /poss syntax. Then I use the options in the top left corner to limit my display to what all my characters are wearing on their heads:

poss3

The possibilities for using this add-on are only limited by your imagination. But one thing I like to be able to do is immediately check a character’s gear, when I’m logged in on another character. Rarely does a day go by when I don’t use Possessions in some manner.

The one thing I’d like to see done for this add-on, though, is a FuBar item so I could right-click and get a drop-down menu. Until then, I’m perfectly happy with the simple interface and its expansive usability.

Looks cool. That said, I’ve been using ArkInventory. It has a similar search function, although it doesn’t appear to be nearly as robust. That said, I’ve found it quite serviceable. The only quibble I have is the lack of easy access; you have to click on a tiny little arrow button to bring up a menu, then click on the search item.

Incidentally, if you are crazy about organising your bags, you should really give ArkInventory a look. In addition to showing you the contents of all of your characters’ bags, bank, mailboxe and equipped slots, it allows you to define filters which categorise items based on whatever critera you desire (name, item level, location, quality, tradeskill, quest item, (non)-soulbound, item slot, itemid, or anything in the item’s tooltip) and then sort those categories into sections.

It took me about a week to get it all set up, but it was definitely worth it. Now, if only they could get rid of the stutter every time I move something… *grumbles*

P.S. Hope you like the new comic. :D

I’m currently using OneView (and OneBank and OneBag) – it’s not as flexible as Possessions but when it comes to keeping track of items it’s the cleanest solution. One click brings up all items in bags and the bank for any of your characters. Having said that, I like the item searches you can do with this. Maybe there’s a case for getting both…

@ Itsnoteasy & Merlot: You both make a good point: I should have explained that I do use OneBag/OneView, etc. for organizing my bags and banks. I find Possessions to be the perfect complement to any bag/bank inventory and sorting add-on.

I tried ArkInventory, because I was intrigued by the filtering. However, I discovered that I was stuck with AI’s ideas of what goes into what filter category, and I couldn’t remove items from a given filter. For example, if for some reason I wanted to filter alphabetically (arrows and Arakkoa feathers), AI wouldn’t let me do that.

I like what I see. I will have to try it the next time I cannot find something on one of my bank toons. >.<

I am fairly organised but that still looks like a very handy addon. Thanks :)

Definitely going to have to try this one out. I usually use Baggins, but I don’t know of a search feature within it and it seems like the author may not be supporting it anymore?
