I’m going to apologize ahead of time in case this turns into a rant, since this article has a very good chance of doing so. However, I’m going to hope Saresa’s offering will suffice.
Besides, mine is a slightly different twist.
I did a bit of Alterac Valley this weekend: Six or eight matches on Saturday, 10 or 12 on Sunday. I was trying to get the Spirit of Competition pet1 and enough honor for Swissy’s priest so she could get a ring.2
I want to talk about one particular BG we had. We were getting our butts kicked. Horde tried to turtle, they managed to keep us from capping both Tower Point and Iceblood Tower. We had no trouble capping the Relief Hut and the Frostwolf Towers. However, we didn’t cap Frostwolf Graveyard, so Horde had a steady zerg going on, and our reinforcements were lower than theirs and dropping.
Finally, several of us convinced those in and around the RH to have any hope of winning, we had to go all in, even though two Warmasters were still up.
Personally, I died at least three times during the assault on Drek. But guess what? Even with two WMs up, we won that BG because we killed Drek. Sure, we didn’t get the extra honor from destroying TP and IBT, but we got a LOT more honor than the Horde did, because we killed their general.
I know a lot of folks have killed Drek (or Van) with a single WM still hanging around, but not many with both WMs up. "It’s impossible!" Bah…it’s a piece of cake. All you need is a tank, a lot of DPS and some healing. Okay, maybe more than "some"–I’ve no idea how many healers we had, but I know there were at least a resto shammy and a holy priest. Yes, the fight took awhile. Yes, Horde were stupid for not retaking RH (I think one person tried, and was thoroughly destroyed as about eight of us rezzed and rushed him; I’m sure the chat on the Horde side wasn’t very pretty).
The thing is, I know Horde have done it several times in BGs I’ve been in: Neither bunker is capped, yet Vann dies. And it’s happened to me a lot more often than I’ve been on a team that accomplished the feat (twice, maybe three times, tops).
Bear in mind, I’m not advocating this strategy as a norm, but there are times when waiting for all the dominoes to fall before you go all in, is a recipe for certain defeat (yours, not theirs). In fact, that happened at least a couple times yesterday, including losing with Drek at 7 percent!3 On the other hand, we also won another AV with our reinforcements around 60 (and over 250 for Horde) because we did kill Drek. Having been on the losing end of that type of fight, I know all too well what Horde chat must have looked like.
So how do you know when to try to take out Drek with one or more WMs up? Well, first, you have to want to win; otherwise, not a lot of point. Second, you need to pay attention to the whole battle: Reinforcement status (can you wear the Horde down and win just by killing them off?); target status (if both Alliance bunkers are down and it appears the Horde are about to go all in, might need to be preemptive); and any other pertinent variables that might pop up.
The point to take away from this discussion, though, is that you can win, despite an apparently hopeless situation. All you need are willing partners and a positive attitude. Some luck wouldn’t hurt, either!
