Anonymous Commenters: Unwelcome, and Not Allowed

I was going to post a comment in this regard to another blog, but I thought that might be creating more drama than it’s worth.

I love comments on my blog, even if I don’t agree with them (or if the commenter doesn’t agree with me). It means I’m being read, and what I had to say had meaning to someone else.

But I won’t suffer fools, and fools are what I consider anonymous commenters to be. I have even harsher words for anonymous people who spew bile while hiding under that cowardly cloak of anonymity.

If you have a conviction, whether it’s in consonance with my views or not, I respect you the more for putting a name behind that conviction.

Signed. Hope you haven’t suffered any abuse personally.

Nope, not me — because I don’t allow Anons. ;)

    Completely disagree.

While some anonymous commenters can be royal pains in the butt (and borderline abusive), the vast majority (at least on my site) are just as thoughtful and respectful as the actual named commenters.

If someone is abusive (either named OR anon) then nuke their comment – but to discriminate against people who would rather have the total anonymity seems counter-productive.

In the end it’s your blog though. =)

Au contraire, mon ami: I feel anons discriminate against the rest of us by hiding behind their anonymity. And I recognize I may be the only person in the world who holds that belief; so be it. I’m comfortable with it.

I guess I’m just glad if anybody is leaving comments on my site at all, even if its hateful, lol. I’m still a noob at the blogging thing.

There are plenty of other places for anons to comment: Blogspot blogs among them. I choose to make people accountable, in some small way, for what they have to say, as do most WordPress bloggers.

I’ve been a part of too many online groups where asshattery was allowed to run rampant; my blog won’t be one of those places. (And for the record, except for spam, I have never removed any post from this site.)

Well said. I’ve never allowed anonymous submissions on SES, and have no intention of ever doing so, either. Back up your words with credence or don’t bother wasting your breath.

I allow Anon on my blog… but that’s just because I have some pretty spacy guildmates out there. I think I have a few from my guildmate and long time friend Rivey that are technically Anon, but he signed his name at the end. :)

The only comment policy I have in place is… if its rude or defamatory? Its not getting past my screening. Otherwise? I will publish it.

But, as others have said, your blog, your policies.

Well said. My opinion on the subject is the same. If you don’t have something useful to say just don’t say it.

You make a good point, Tzia, and something I probably should have mentioned: I have built-in spam protection, but there is no other sort of preemptive moderation: I don’t use captchas, I don’t moderate first comments (anymore; I used to), I don’t do anything to prevent legitimate comments from being published…except require a name and email address (and even the email address can, and has been, spoofed).

AKA, internet f-wad theory. Totally agreed. Partially contributed to my move to wordpress, although I’ve yet to receive such comments. Still, can’t be too careful.
