A New Poll, Some Updates, and a QQ

New Poll Up!

It seems I only remember to update the site poll after I publish a new article, which means if I edit said article, those of you who subscribe via RSS won’t know there’s a new poll.

So here’s the news: There is a new site poll at the Aerie! Hop on over and click a choice. I’m just surveying my readers to see what your raiding mains are; I’m interested to know if I have a broad-based readership, or if most of you are priests and hunters.

Yes, I Was Bored Last Night…

Actually, I was tired, and so too, I think, were my regular quest partners. We grouped for a few dailies, but for the most part, did our own things last night. Around 10:30 I was looking through my cooking recipes, and realized there are some pretty good fish dishes. Just one problem: Osprey never learned to fish.1

So I hied myself over to Ironforge and the Forlorn Cavern. Talked to the fishing trainer, bought a cheap pole and some bait, and started fishing. I figured I might as well give myself a shot at Old Ironjaw while I was at it! I caught 25 fish, then 50 fish. As expected, I reached these milestones (together with some good-natured jibes from a couple guildies) at 26 and 51 skill, respectively. (Since you start at 1 skill point, your first fish is at 2 skill points, and so on.)

Something interesting happened at 99 skill, though: I got the achievement for 100 fish! I expected to get the achievement at 101 skill, so somehow, I caught 2 fish with one cast (twice) or 3 fish on one cast! ’Tis a mystery!

A Tailor’s Tale

Long-time readers (and anyone who’s bothered to look at Osprey’s Armory profile) know Osprey is a Mooncloth Tailor. Pre-Wrath, I was strongly considering abandoning Tailoring in favor of Inscription. However, I was convinced to keep tailoring because of the spellthread patterns, and for the Magnificent Flying Carpet.2

Spellthread is great; no question about that. But any tailor can make it, which means you and I don’t need to be tailors to get it. As for the flying rug…yes, it’s cool. It’s also (at the moment) a vehicle, rather than a mount, which is a pain in the butt.3 Why? Because in order to pick an herb while using the carpet, you have to click the Leave Vehicle button. If you’re on a mount, the act of picking the flower dismounts you. If you know me at all, you know I’m all about reducing keystrokes and mouse clicks in game.

Furthermore, whether vehicle or not,4 it’s Just Another Mount. I don’t want or need 25 of them. However, I did make my Magnificent Flying Carpet last night, and it is cool to fly straight down, and be parallel to the ground as you dive.

cryingSo yes, this a QQ. I wish I’d given up Tailoring for Inscription on the Priest, and kept Skinning & Leatherworking on the Hunter. However, there is a plus side: All the herbs Kestrel picks (yes, he’s Herbalism/Inscription), he keeps for inks. Osprey’s flowers go for flasks and potions, but since he only needs Goldclover, Icethorn, Lichbloom and Frozen Lotus (how about a realistic drop rate there, Blizz?), Kestrel’s literally swimming in inks. This is a Good Thing, and will only get better when I actually get into the business of selling glyphs.

Back to Tailoring, the other huge problem with the profession is, besides the aforementioned spellthread and embroidery patterns, for the most part, crafted cloth for Holy Priests is easily and quickly surpassed by drops. In fact, the only piece of crafted gear Osprey has are his Moonshroud Gloves, which I bought at the AH, because I haven’t really worked at tailoring since Wrath was released! (On the other hand, there are only three significant upgrades to those gloves, too.)

So here’s the answer I gave Breana this morning when she asked if she should drop Tailoring for Inscription: YES!

  1. Kestrel did, early on, but abandoned it at about 125 skill. In September, he started back in on fishing, mostly for the fishing daily, as well as to make hit and crit food. He was the first or second person in the guild to get The Coin Master.
  2. There are also embroidery patterns, but you can only embroider your own cloak, so if you’re only ever a holy priest, only one is worthwhile and the other patterns are a waste of gold.
  3. Except you don’t sit to ride it: how about a choice there, Blizz?
  4. Supposedly, the carpet is changing to a mount in 3.0.8

Now, it’s been a long time since I’ve fished, but I’m pretty sure that it is possible to catch 2 fish with 1 cast… sometimes. I recall doing it with Raw Brilliant Smallfish.

That could be what happened, Stop. And of course, before Achievements, no one might have noticed. I’m sure not checking to see if there are 1 or 2 or 3 fish on the line. :)

It could simply be that you didn’t get skillups on two of the casts.

I considered that, but (without getting into a long, drawn-out analysis) that doesn’t seem consistent with the behavior I saw after hitting 100 skill: I was still skilling on every fish caught through 105 (where I stopped for the night). Generally, when you don’t skill up on every caught fish, there’s a pattern that’s more discernible.

    Kestrel,
You won’t like this at all. But here is how it goes. As you gain fishing skill it becomes harder and harder to level up. 1-100 you are see pretty consistent skill ups. Then it will become every 2 cast, very 3 cast, very 4 cast. When you hit northrend (about fishing level 350-375). You will need to do about 10 cast before a skill point is awarded.

Oh, I’m well aware of that: Keep in mind, I do have a max-level fisherman in Kestrel. :) (See Footnote #1)

I’m all but certain to drop LW on my horde hunter and take up herb. I have LW on alliance side, and it’s just pretty bad. You could easily save thousands of gold and just buy those epic items for a 20g tip or 50g tip. If you are a hunter, LW is okay since you can make ammo bags and so forth, but so can every other LW out there (and there are a ton). So yeah, very little benefit to LW right now (the exception is the self-only bracer enchant). I’d rather have an epic mount than get to 450 LW and have nothing to show for it.

Yeah, I kinda figured LW was in the same boat as tailoring. What I really regret is giving up skinning, which can be VERY profitable. Maybe at some point Kestrel will go back to LW, especially if I can buy inks from a vendor in 3.0.8. (Well, trade inks; same diff, I guess.)

After reading all of this about fishing, I am once again, not going to bother to level it.

LOL Noobie! Well, I certainly can’t blame you. Some people enjoy it; I just do it. No enjoyment there at all. ;)

I love fishing. It’s one of few professions I’m glad I leveled. The others being cooking (150 Kirin Tor rep for cooking daily, woo!), first aid, and skinning. I don’t even want to talk about Leatherworking, I’ll just get all upset.
But seriously, what’s not to love about a skill you can use to 1. get non-combat pets, 2. get random items, and 3. get things you can cook to make buff food, without expending other consumables (like bullets or whatever). It definitely helps me to be self-sufficient as a raider, and what’s not to like there? :)

Now see? I always knew that if you were given a bunch of lemons, you’d not only make lemonade, but lemon meringue pie as well!

You’re right, of course: Fishing DOES have a lot of benefits. But…it’s still way boring. :p

was enjoying a lovely ‘Shroom & Swiss (my favorite) for lunch today while perusing my Google Reader… thank god for that puppy, since anything “game-related” is filtered out at my current temp assignment. Mmm… ‘shroom & swiss….
    What was my point?

OH! Yes, I was reading a couple of entries from Kestrel and happened upon his “Tailor’s Tale.” I have to respectfully disagree.
