Looking For A Better E-mail Icon: Can You Help?

Look up there…no, on the right…higher, just under the banner. Yeah…there. Pretty snazzy lil RSS icon…the blue matches the Aerie’s color scheme pretty closely. Ditto the Twitter bird: Nice 3D image, probably Photoshopped. The php functions to pull in the subscriber numbers are pretty cool too (if you have Firebug, check it out, or go here for the original).

Incidentally, all that subscriber stuff is not part of the header, nor is it part of the sidebars. Rather, it is embedded in Thesis theme’s Multimedia Box, which can be used for all sorts of neat things. At one time, I had the subscription links located "after the header" (but "before the sidebars"), which was fine, but I think this is more elegant (until I want to do something fancier with the multimedia box).

Okay…back on point. We have a nice RSS icon, a cute Twitter bird…and then, for the folks who prefer to subscribe via email…well, let’s just say the envelope is "plain." (Hey…I heard that! "Boring"? *sigh* Yeah, you’re right. It is boring!)

Now, this is where you come in. Well, some of you, maybe… I have Photoshop (PC version); I have Iris for the Mac. What I do not have, are mad skills. In fact, my skills are so bad, they make me mad. Yeah…they drive me nuts. Anyway…what I’m looking for is someone to take pity on me and either find or create a knock-out email icon for that spot. I can’t offer anything in return, except full credit and my thanks.

If you’re interested, the icon should have a height of 32 pixels (to match the RSS icon). I did see a pretty cool icon that took the "standard" orange RSS icon and replaced the curved white lines with the angled lines of an envelope…but I don’t want orange. Yes, blue would be nice. Very nice. Shiny like the RSS icon would be nice too.

While this isn’t strictly a contest, I’ll happily publish all the submissions, with full credit given to the submitter. (If it’s not your original artwork, please be sure your submission is in the public domain, and provide the artist’s info as well.) I’d certainly be willing to let the ‘winner’ write a guest post, if you like. Or feature some other original artwork here as well. I’m pretty easy that way.

Feel free to send any submissions to kestrelsaerie AT gmail dot com.

In the meantime…I’ll be waiting…

Go to Smashing Magazine and wade through the “free icons” posts. I spent about a day doing it (that’s where I found all the icons I use in my various TamiMoore posts) and I absolutely adored every moment of it. Guaranteed you’ll find what you’re looking for. <3

I’ll try that! I Googled and Binged all manner of combinations of “RSS/email/subscription/mail/icon/graphic/image” the other night for several hours…and as you can see, didn’t come up with much.

Thanks, Tami. (But hey…I’m still willing to accept submissions from any artists out there!) :D

For sure – custom always beats generic. <3

Even if you get one from an artist, I still think you'd have fun going through all those free icon sets. ^_^

As you can see now, I’ve found a “suitable substitute,” thanks to Tami’s suggestion. The icon currently displayed is courtesy DryIcons; specifically, the Luna Blue icon set. If you’re looking for icons for any project, this site just might be your “one-stop” shop.

However, I still consider this to be an “interim fix:” I’d still like to get any submissions or suggestions from any of you!

Hey Kes! Odd place to find such things, but I actually stumbled onto several logos and chiclets in galleries over on Flickr that would be very useful, provided you don’t mind tinkering with the colors a bit. (Orange and blue go together nicely, but not so much when it’s, like, 1% orange and 99% blue.) I’ll email you what I’ve got.

As for the Smashing Magazine entry: I’m with Tami on this one. They’ve got some really terrific and slick-looking designs over there.

Agreed! Spent a couple hours (or more) there yesterday. Pretty fond of the one I have up now, but I’ve barely scratched the surface @ Smashing. Looking forward to more exploring!
